About

“Newfangled Native American” is about the contemporary Native American of today.  Newfangled being defined as “different from what one is use to, objectionably new”, so basically, this site defines a new kind of Native American that goes against the romanticized Hollywood version of a Native American.  “Newfangled Native American” captures interesting and sometimes odd tidbits of everyday life as it is, and of course, mingled with the experiences and perspective of contemporary Native American thought!  I hope you enjoy reading “Newfangled Native American”!    –Matt (An urban Navajo Indian, who holds the titles of Husband, Father and Mental Health Therapist!)

Well done Matt! Well done! Can’t wait to see future blogs——maybe a TV series will be made out this? You can be the Native American version of “Modern Family.”

    Matt,

I attended BYU for a time and had six Native American roommates, some of whom performed with the Lamanite Generation. “Go My Son” was one of my favorite songs to see them perform.

I love your blog. I am 41 year old stay at home dad to 3 girls. I am Navajo married to a white woman and trying to get our girls interested in our culture. All my family lives in window rock on the Rez. And the rest live in SLC. We live in Panama and love the Indians here. Thank you so much for remembering our roots, and being willing to share. Most older generation Navajos won’t share much with the outside world. Cudos my brother.
